Food for Others' mission is to obtain and distribute free food to the hungry of Northern Virginia and support food programs of other community-based organizations. We provide a channel for people to volunteer their services to help their neighbors in need.

Food for Others, the largest distributor of free food directly to people in need in Northern Virginia, provides the assistance vitally needed by our unemployed and low-income neighbors. We provide a safety net for people who suddenly face unforeseen emergencies such as a family illness or the loss of a job or a spouse.

Even though Northern Virginia is considered one of the wealthiest jurisdictions in the country, we still face a poverty rate of about 5%. This means, based on U.S. Census figures, that more than 90,000 people are living in poverty and 30 percent are children.

Food for Others is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit organization funded in part by the Fairfax and Arlington County governments. We also receive funding from foundations, churches and many generous individuals. A small but dedicated staff and the hard work of over 1,000 volunteers allow us to keep our costs low and maximize our service to those in need.

Financial contributions to Food for Others are tax-deductible.  Donors will receive a tax receipt acknowledgement of their donation.

As an organization dedicated to sound fiscal management and transparency, we are providing easy access to our IRS 990, Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax. For additional information about Food for Others, please see our Annual Report.

Scouting for Food 2014

Scouting for Food collection bags will be distributed in neighborhoods on Saturday, November 1 and the food will be collected the following Saturday, November 7. If you receive a bag on your front door, please remember to fill it and put in on your doorstep on November 7.

If you do not receive a bag from the Scouts, you are invited to participate by filling your own bag and bringing it by the Food for Others warehouse on Saturday, November 7 from 9:30am until 2:30pm. Our warehouse will be open for all donations on that day.

Complete the Circle

Complete the Circle 2014 Foodraiser and "Live Painting" Aerial Photograph event, on Sunday, November 9, 1:00-2:30 pm will be held at the Fairfax High School Practice Field. Help us create a "living painting" on the field, using hundreds of community members dressed in special T-shirts that will "color" the image to be photographed from 80 feet above by artist Daniel Dancer of Art for the Sky.This event is presented jointly by Our Daily Bread and Food for Others.

Participants are asked to bring a $5 donation for a Complete the Circle T-shirt, and three or more non-perishable food items and/or household necessities, to be incorporated into the photo as the outer circle rim of our living painting so that we will "complete the circle" of giving to provide help and hope to local families and children facing hunger. Make plans to form a team or participate as an individual or family!
