How We Help Unfortunately, hunger in Northern Virginia has not eased with the economic boom we have experienced. Rapidly rising costs of living, extraordinary housing and transportation costs, and layoffs and changes in the job markets continue to impact our citizens. Below are the statistics showing the amount of free food distributed and number of families served over the past five years.
Warehouse Distributions Free emergency food distributions are made from our warehouse and are given to people who are referred to us by social service providers throughout the area including social workers, clergy, hospitals, and schools. The amount can provide nutrition for a family for seven days, if necessary, until other forms of assistance become available. Families who meet U.S. Government income guidelines may also be eligible to receive USDA food supplements. Click here for a list of some of our referring agencies. Street Site Distributions Direct free food distributions are made at 14 street sites in low-income neighborhoods. We provide food for approximately 260 families (or about 950 people) each night at these sites. Nine sites are in Fairfax County, three are in Arlington, and one is in Falls Church. A list of these sites can be found by clicking here. Recipient Agencies Hunger is a symptom of other problems: homelessness, poverty, unemployment, and health issues. Food for Others’ recipient agencies fight these larger problems and are better able to maximize their resources with our help. We make bulk distributions of food to more than 40 other charitable organizations that support soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and deliveries to the elderly, as well as church and community center pantries.
