Food for Others, the largest distributor of free food directly to people in need in Northern Virginia, provides the assistance vitally needed by our unemployed and low-income neighbors. We provide a safety net for people who suddenly face unforeseen emergencies such as a family illness or the loss of a job or a spouse.
Even though Northern Virginia is considered one of the wealthiest jurisdictions in the country, we still face a poverty rate of about 5%. This means, based on U.S. Census figures, that more than 90,000 people are living in poverty and 30 percent are children.
Food for Others is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit organization funded in part by the Fairfax and Arlington County governments. We also receive funding from foundations, churches and many generous individuals. A small but dedicated staff and the hard work of over 1,000 volunteers allow us to keep our costs low and maximize our service to those in need.
Financial contributions to Food for Others are tax-deductible. Donors will receive a tax receipt acknowledgement of their donation.
As an organization dedicated to sound fiscal management and transparency, we are providing easy access to our IRS 990, Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax . For additional information about Food for Others, please see our Annual Report.
| Give a Gift that will Last! |
Don't know what to put on your gift list this year? Choose a meaningful gift for a friend or loved one and help children and families in need. These are hard times for too many people. With a gift to Food for Others you can help fill the widening gap between increased need and dwindling resources.
Food for Others provided free food more than 26,000 times at our warehouse alone, and many more times at neighborhood sites and through other community organizations in the past year. In FY 2011, Food for Others served more than 12,000 families, thereby providing food to more than 43,000 individuals.
For every $1 donated, Food for Others can collect and distribute food for five meals - so your gift of $40 can feed 200 people. To make a gift in honor or memory of someone, please fill out a Financial Donation Form and mail or fax your donation to Food for Others. Upon receipt, we will send your honoree or designated person an announcement of your gift. It you would like to customize your message, after making a donation, contact Food for Others to let us create for you a personalized note to tell your friends and family that you have honored them with a Food for Others gift.

| Help the Homeless |
Food for Others is proud to participate in the Help the Homeless Program of Fannie Mae. We're still in need of sponsors (see above on how you can "Become a Friend of Food for Others.") Thanks to the energy and donations of many in the community, we have seven schools supporting Food for Others through mini-walks on our behalf including: Centreville High School, Commonwealth Academy, Flint Hill Lower School, Kenmore Middle School, Lake Braddock Secondary School, Lanier Middle School, and Swanson Middle School.
With the high cost of living in Northern Virginia, 24% of households lack adequate income to meet their regular expenditures, such as housing, food, and transportation. Food for Others helps prevent homelessness by helping those struggling to make ends meet.
