Dear Friends,

Food for Others experienced another record year. The good news is that we helped 15,150 families, more than ever before, and that the rate of expansion seems to have slowed down.  The bad news is that we experienced a $43,673 deficit of expenses over revenues, appreciably larger than the FY 2003 deficit of $22,855.  We expect another record year in FY 2005 due to the simple fact that the population of families living in poverty continues to increase.  We have downsized staff to trim expenses and increased fund raising activities in order to prevent deficit operations in FY 2005.
Food distribution amounted to more than two million pounds for the second year in a row.  Food for Others depends on food donations.  Grocery stores and the Capital Area Food Bank are the major donors.  Food drives, especially those conducted by the Boy Scouts, Postal Workers and schools, are important sources of nonperishable food.  Gleaning activities provide fresh produce, especially at the U. S. Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, Maryland, where hundreds of volunteers participate every season.    Donations of meat products, milk and eggs are limited but are important nutritionally.  Thanks to Hunters for the Hungry and the Fairfax County Deer Management Program, Food for Others receives thousands of pounds of frozen venison that are welcomed by our clients.  Most of our food purchases are for milk and eggs.  Funding for milk and eggs has decreased substantially because of reduced United Way Community Services Funds support.  The leading source of donated food in FY 2004 continued to be the Capital Area Food Bank, 837,238 pounds compared with 919,474 pounds last year.
Food for Others obtains much of its food through food rescue operations.  Staff and volunteers pick up good food that would otherwise be thrown away, due to overstocking or an expired sell date on the product, from local grocery stores and other retail food establishments.  The food is brought to the warehouse for temporary storage including refrigeration as appropriate.  Food drives provide most of the nonperishable food.

Major Achievements in FY 2004

Management

Roxanne Rice was employed as Executive Director in February 2004 to provide Food for Others with the professional management needed to meet continuing expansion.  Roxanne was formerly with the Fairfax-Falls Church United Way and has quickly addressed growth and funding issues.  We thank outgoing and dedicated directors who completed their terms in FY 2004, President Sue Federico, Treasurer Bill Jones, and Directors Terry Donald, Richard Fruchterman, Walter Mortensen, Lauro Romero and Rev. Ron Winters.  New or returning directors included Vice President for Fundraising Ed Demoney, Treasurer Carmine Carullo and Director Richard Guadagno.  Current officers and board members are:

Food for Other’s successes are due to the hard work of its dedicated staff, committed volunteers, board of directors and a community involved with all our activities.  Without this partnership effort, Food for Others would be unable to serve as Northern Virginia’s safety net for people in need of food assistance.  The value of the 22,699 volunteer hours was $429,692, exceeding last year’s value of $390,128.  Our database currently contains 636 names of volunteers committed on a regular schedule to feeding the hungry of Northern Virginia.  It would be impossible for Food for Others to accomplish its mission without them.  Equally important are the volunteers engaged in gleaning activities, making sandwiches or assisting with warehouse operations.

Both office volunteers and warehouse staff have improved their efficiency for direct food assistance in Merrifield and a relatively stable level of clients at food distribution sites and organizations using Food for Others as a food bank. Volunteers share the brunt of intake and recordkeeping work.  Staff is mostly involved with the heavy lifting associated with moving more than 80 tons of food in and out of Merrifield every month.  We have installed a new computer intake system, streamlining our office operations and greatly reducing what had become a mountain of paperwork.  Other technology includes our website, http://www.foodforothers.org, and e-mail address, rrice@foodforothers.org.

Staff departing Food for Others included Office Manager Linda Atwell and Driver/Warehouse Technician Silvia Quintanilla.  New staff members include Roxanne Rice and Rosie Green.

 Sincerely,

 Anne Suter Zimmer
