Food for Others' mission is to obtain and distribute free food to the hungry of Northern Virginia and support food programs of other community-based organizations. We provide a channel for people to help their neighbors by actively volunteering their service.

Virginia Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP)

Your individual donation to Food for Others of $500 or more ($889 for businesses) can reduce your Virginia State income taxes by 45% of your donation--up to $50,000 ($175,000 for businesses). Virginia Residents may support Food for Others by participating in the Virginia Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP).  This program, created by the 1981 Virginia General Assembly, provides state income tax credits as incentives for individuals and businesses who contribute directly to approved, nonprofit organizations. These approved organizations include those, like Food for Others, which are designed to benefit people with incomes at or below 150% of the poverty level.

Basic details are as follows:

  • Minimum individual donation: $500 x .45 = $225 tax credit
  • Maximum individual donation: $111,111 x .45 = $50,000 tax credit
  • Minimum business donation: $889 * .45 = $400 tax credit
  • The credit may be claimed only to the extent it was not claimed on the donor's Federal tax return.

Food for Others welcomes donations under the NAP program. The program provides donors with an opportunity to receive tax credits and Food for Others with an opportunity to receive donations for its program of emergency food services.

Food for Others will respond to donors, provide additional forms for the NAP program, and will respond with a "Thank You" receipt for tax purposes. Individual and business donors may obtain more information by contacting us at 703-207-9173 or e-mail: info@foodforothers.org.
