Yearly Events

 April - Empty Bowls

This event raises critical funds to help those in need with food emergencies and to fight hunger in Northern Virginia. The Giving Circle of HOPE has organized "Empty Bowls" as a huge annual fundraiser for Food for Others for several years. In addition to fundraising, the event serves an important educational role, raising awareness of the ongoing problem of hunger and the need to help those in our community who have empty bowls. Local ceramic artists donate unique and beautiful handcrafted bowls, which guests may take home in exchange for a donation to Food for Others. Top chefs from the Washington area donate soup and bread, and area musicians donate their time, adding to an enjoyable night that energizes the community to combat hunger.

This year Empty Bowls will be held on Friday, April 12 at Floris United Methodist Church.  For ticket information call 703-207-9173.

July – October – Harvest for the Hungry

Pick produce for those in need in our area by helping us harvest what USDA grows! The harvesting program runs from approximately the second week of July to the second week of October. Harvesting takes place at the USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, a 7000 acre facility in Beltsville, MD. You must register to participate, as space is limited. Please see our harvesting page for more information.

Fall – Help the Homeless Program

One big way you can help Food for Others assist those in need is by participating with us in the Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Program:

1) Register as a virtual walker: Act now and your online registration paid at this link become a $35 donation to Food for Others (we need 4,000 participants!) Click on the link, select Food for Others as the beneficiary, choose any future Food for Others event listed, and register as a virtual walker.

Or,

2) If you prefer to write a check, sponsor Food for Others and your check qualifies us for 20% matching funds from Fannie Mae: Just mail Food for Others a check made payable to "Help the Homeless" (be sure to make it payable to "Help the Homeless" and we need it delivered to us by October 30. This way your donation earns the additional matching funds.)

Food for Others' 2011 HTH program earned more than $75,000--the maximum participant incentive and additional funds from Fannie Mae. Note, Fannie Mae keeps nothing...even registration fees come back to Food for Others!

Thank you to friends of Food for Others who sent us HTH donations, and the students and teachers who supported us last year at these schools:

Centreville High School

Commonwealth Academy

Flint Hill School

Kenmore Middle School

Lake Bradock High School

Lanier Middle School
