Food for Others' mission is to obtain and distribute free food to the hungry of Northern Virginia and support food programs of other community-based organizations. We provide a channel for people to help their neighbors by actively volunteering their service.

Yearly Events

 April – Empty Bowls

This event, usually in April each year, is held to benefit Food for Others to assist in our mission of helping the homeless and hungry.  For a small donation guests enjoy a delicious meal of soup and bread in handcrafted bowls donated by local ceramic artists.  They may then keep the bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world.

May – Golf Tournament

The 5th Annual Food for Others Golf Tournament will be held this year on Monday, July 21, 2008.  For the first time we will be playing at the Evergreen County Club - a beautiful private course in Haymarket, Virginia. The tournament will be a captain’s choice best ball format with a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start.  We look forward again to a wonderful day of golf and festivities!

July – October – Harvest for the Hungry

Pick produce for those in need in our area by helping us harvest what USDA grows! The harvesting program runs from approximately the second week of July to the second week of October. Harvesting takes place at the USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, a 7000 acre facility in Beltsville, MD. You must register to participate, as space is limited. Please see our harvesting page for more information.

Fall – Help the Homeless Program

There are many ways you can help Food for Others assist those in need through the Fannie Mae Help the Homeless program. Please click here for information on how you can become a Friend of Food for Others, sponsor walkers and hold a mini-walk.

In November of each year Food for Others participates in the Help the Homeless Walkathon on the Mall in Washington. Walkers must register and mark their form with the Food for Others designee code, FDFOR, in order to insure the funds they raise are returned to Food for Others. All registration fees and sponsorships solicited by walkers are returned to Food for Others. In addition, Fannie Mae offers incentives for the number of walkers signed up. Register to walk for FDFOR at Fannie Mae's web site.
