Distribution Programs: Our Warehouse
There are two ways in which we provide food at our warehouse: emergency referrals, and USDA supplements.
Referrals for Emergency Food
If you have a referral from a social worker or agency for emergency food, we will provide you with milk, eggs, and other food items. This package amounts to three to five day ’s worth of food for your family. We accept six emergency food referrals over a 12 month period of time. Each referral must be sent to Food for Others via FAX. Once received, the referrals are kept on file for two weeks since the intent is to provide food for an emergency only. Please have your social worker call 703-207-9173 for more information.
USDA Supplements (United States Department of Agriculture) Program
The USDA food is provided to Food for Others by the US government. No food substitutions are allowed. You may return once per calendar month for another USDA food package. USDA packages are based on the size of your household. You must be a Virginia resident and meet financial guidelines stated on the application form (provided in Spanish and English). We ask that you update any changes in address, household members, and income level as they occur during the year. New forms are filled out in July of each year as the old ones are sent to the USDA program administrators.
Please note:
- Each year all Fairfax County residents are required to fill out a form which the county uses to keep statistics on the population for funding purposes.
- Proxy forms: We recognize that many of our clients have limited access to transportation or are unable to reach us during our operating hours due to work or illness. Upon request, we will be happy to provide you with proxy forms, which authorize another person to pick up food on your behalf. We keep these forms on file and require identification from the person when they pick up your food. Proxy forms must also be updated yearly.
- We are very fortunate to be members of a diverse community. Please note that our staff consists mainly of English speaking volunteers who do their best to meet your various needs. We do have several members of our warehouse staff who are fluent in both Spanish and English, but they are available on a limited basis, as they are often making deliveries and pick-ups of food. We cannot guarantee they will be available to assist you. We appreciate your patience and cooperation. Upon request, we can also provide you with information on medical insurance for children (provided through Fairfax County), soup kitchens and shelters in the area, as well as other emergency food distribution sites.
