Over 72% of work done at Food for Others is performed by volunteers.  That is the equivalent of 13 full time staff members!  We could not provide the level of service and quantity of food to our clients without the dedication of our amazing volunteers.  Thank you so much!

Volunteers assist with a variety of tasks, all of which are important.  Some general qualifications are listed below.  Please click through the tabs for more detailed information on Special Events and ways to volunteer in the Warehouse, Front Office, Ticket Pulling, and Neighborhood Sites.

Parking can occasionally be limited. When you arrive at the warehouse, you may park in any unmarked parking space.

General Volunteer Information:

  • Warehouse shifts:  Monday-Friday 10:00am-Noon and 3:00-5:00pm
  • Individuals MUST sign up in advance and be on our schedule to volunteer.  No walk-ins please!
  • Minimum age to volunteer in the warehouse is 12 years old
  • Children ages 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult
  • All volunteers must wear closed toe shoes.  NO EXCEPTIONS!
  • All court-mandated service hours will be conducted in the warehouse ONLY
  • Weekend and special event opportunities are posted on the Food for Others website, Facebook and Twitter pages on an as-needed basis
  • Group opportunities are available in the warehouse
  • Groups can also host food drives and Power Pack assembly events off-site

We could REALLY use some help from people that speak Spanish and English well.

There are 4 shifts per day:

Would you like to help “pull tickets”? It’s the task of putting client’s food together and distributing it to them at our loading dock. The location is our warehouse at 2938 Prosperity Ave, Fairfax, 22031

To do this task:

~ You should be able to stay for a complete shift:

– AM Shift: 9:25 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

– PM Shift: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

~ Lift 30 pounds.

~ Do some elementary computer functions.

~ Occasionally assist a client in loading food into their car, mostly for customers with physical disabilities.

~ Ability to volunteer in hot or cold weather.

~ Ability to stand for a period.

~ Comfortable saying “No” to client requests, if the need arises.

Office Volunteer:

~ There are two shifts per day, 9:25 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

~ An ideal shift will have two volunteers working the front desk, doing client intake.

~ The process has been streamlined and all touch-points removed.

Are you fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Farsi, or Arabic?

Food for Others is seeking volunteers to assist clients during the intake process by verbally translating program information from English, into these various languages, to better serve our clients. Please send an email to volunteer@foodforothers.org indicating your language(s). Shift options are Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Example: I’d love to use my Korean skills on Tuesdays during the morning shift of 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.


The warehouse is the heart of our operation.  This is where all of our food donations are stored and where volunteers and staff members sort, package and distribute USDA and emergency food supplies directly to our clients.  The warehouse is high energy, full of activity and a great place to roll up your sleeves and make a difference!

Warehouse Info:

  • Volunteer shifts are Monday-Friday from 10:00am-Noon OR 3:00-5:00pm
  • Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age
  • Children ages 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult
  • Individuals MUST sign up in advance and be on our schedule to volunteer.  No walk-ins please!
  • Volunteers must be able to perform lightweight lifting and be on their feet
  • All volunteers must wear closed toe shoes.  NO EXCEPTIONS!
  • No cell phones or ear buds while working in the warehouse
  • Please don’t bring valuables with you to volunteer
  • The warehouse is not climate controlled, so please dress according to the weather outside

Warehouse Tasks:

  • Sort food donations & check for expired items
  • Stock shelves
  • Bag produce/frozen foods/non-perishable canned goods
  • Unload trucks
  • Assemble weekend food packs (Power Packs) for elementary school children
  • Assist with cleaning the warehouse and rinsing out storage tubs

Front office volunteers are the first faces the clients see when they enter our building.  They provide an invaluable service to our organization by treating our clients with respect, dignity, patience and compassion. These volunteers greet clients and social workers, input their information into our database, verify client applications, process food orders, and assist clients with shopping for emergency food.

Volunteers must be comfortable interacting with a diverse population, proficient in basic computer skills (Microsoft Outlook and Access Database), and able to exercise discretion when problems arise or numerous clients arrive at once.  This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys direct service with clients, is retired or has a flexible schedule, is bilingual, and/or interested in social work or nutrition.  Training will be provided on the client database, requirements for eligibility, and types of services we provide.  New front office volunteers typically “shadow” more experienced volunteers until they feel confident with the intake process.

Front Office Qualifications:

  • Volunteer shifts are Monday-Friday from 9:25am-1:00pm OR 1:00-5:00pm
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office is helpful
  • Consistency and arriving on time are very important
  • Ability to multi-task and not get flustered when the lobby is busy
  • Ability to treat clients with dignity and respect
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other volunteers and staff
  • Good people skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse population
  • Bilingual language skills helpful, but not required
  • Good sense of humor a plus!

Front Office Tasks:

  • Greet clients, verify identification/residence/income, input requested service into database
  • Answer questions about eligibility; contact social worker or service agency if there is a question
  • Interact with a diverse population; English is typically a second language for our clients
  • Answer main phone line & give basic information about our services, hours of operation, directions, etc.
  • Perform basic office tasks such as filing, copying & shredding

“Ticket Pulling” is the term we use for putting food items into the USDA and emergency food boxes and distributing them directly to the clients.  This is a physical position and requires the ability to pack and move heavy boxes of food onto the loading dock (up to 30 lbs).  This is an essential volunteer role since we distribute food all day long.  This is the perfect position if you like fresh air, exercise and interacting with a diverse population.

Ticket Pulling Qualifications:

  • Volunteer shifts are Monday-Friday from 9:25am-1:00pm or 1:00-5:00pm
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old
  • Good people skills and ability to communicate with a diverse population
  • Bilingual language skills helpful, but not required
  • Ability to be on your feet for extended period of time
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Treat clients with dignity and respect
  • Confidence to decline if clients ask for additional items not on their list
  • Good sense of humor a plus!

Ticket Pulling Tasks:

  • Fill boxes in assembly-line fashion with food items available that day
  • Keep client food boxes organized
  • Ensure that clients proceed in an orderly fashion in the loading dock area
  • Load food boxes into client vehicles if necessary
  • Keep calm under pressure!

Food for Others distributes food on weeknights at 17 different locations throughout Fairfax County.  Volunteers play an integral role in this operation by picking up the food at our warehouse, driving it to the assigned location, and distributing it fairly amongst the individuals and families who come to receive services.  The food is picked up at Food for Others between 5:00-5:30pm and then distributed between 6:00-6:30pm.

We have partnered with a number of church and service organizations to provide volunteers for most of our Neighborhood Sites.  New volunteers will be added to a substitution list and contacted if a regular volunteer needs to cancel or is on travel. 

Neighborhood Site Qualifications:

  • Volunteers must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license
  • Must use your own vehicle to transport food
  • Must be able to lift crates of produce and non-perishable items
  • Must arrive on time to distribute the food
  • Ability to treat clients with respect and dignity
  • Ability to diffuse difficult situations

Neighborhood Site Tasks:

  • Load food from Food for Others warehouse into personal vehicle (between 5:00-5:30pm)
  • Transport food to assigned neighborhood location
  • Distribute food in equitable manner (between 6:00-6:30pm)
  • Return crates to warehouse
